Bethany Jilliard in the the risible play within a play in Manitoba Theatre Centre's The Seagull. Bruce Monk captures the beauty/silliness of the opening moments of Chekhov's remarkable work about art, artists and ego within a family. What particularly works are the bars of black, top and bottom, framing the actor and rendering her headdress even more luminescent; but also (almost hidden in the bottom bar of black) echoes of stage-boards on which the actor is standing.
