We don't often publish horizontal pictures, especially not as our picture of the week. Our site's format requires vertical photos for maximum impact. But we could not resist this gem from photographer David Hou for Canadian Stage's RACE. The actors - Jason Priestley (l) and Nigel Shawn Owen - are both incidental to the photo but integral to its composition. Hou has caught the various shades of black, white, beige, brown and everything in between that makes this Mamet play so thorny. The two glaringly white and empty chairs provide suspense, the briefs boxes piled high in the rear and the clutter on the table suggest busy law firm. But it is in the shadows - the coat, the poster and the black slash beneath the table, that the drama of the photo lives.
