EVENT: (Ottawa) Amelia: The Girl Who Wants To Fly

MEDIA RELEASE:
Amelia: The Girl Who Wants to Fly at the
Great Canadian Theatre Company
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - OTTAWA, ONTARIO – September 6, 2011

Amelia Earhart comes flying in to the Great Canadian Theatre Company (GCTC) in Amelia: The Girl Who Wants to Fly, a production from the Festival Players of Prince Edward County, at the Irving Greenberg Theatre Centre, 1233 Wellington St. West. Ottawa local Eliza-Jane Scott stars as the iconic aviatrix in this new musical, written by John Gray and directed by Sarah Phillips. Following two preview performances on September 13 and 14, Amelia: The Girl Who Wants to Fly officially opens on September 15 and runs until October 2.

Be transported to the Golden Age of Flight – a world of planes, dreams and celebrity. Amelia is the fascinating story of the meteoric rise and mysterious disappearance of Amelia Earhart. The legendary Earhart was a pioneer of the skies, a courageous woman who defied all conventions of her time and whose image resonates even now, 70+ years after her death.

GCTC Artistic Director Lise Ann Johnson is thrilled to open the season with this enchanting musical, which was a runaway hit for the Festival Players of Prince Edward County. Written by John Gray who is critically acclaimed for the well-known Billy Bishop Goes to War, Amelia also features “a knockout performance by Ottawa actress Eliza-Jane Scott. This role was tailor made for her outstanding musical and dramatic talents,” says Johnson.

In addition to Scott, the production also features Steven Gallagher as Amelia’s publicist and husband G.P. and Karin Randoja as her sister, Midge. The creative team includes music direction by Michael Barber, in association with Cameron Moncur. Set and costume design is by Jennifer Triemstra with a lighting design by Raha Javanfar. The stage manager is Kate Macdonnell.

Continuing the tradition of presenting visual art that reflects the GCTC mainstage productions in The Lorraine 'Fritzi' Yale Gallery on the second floor of the Irving Greenberg Theatre Centre, an exhibit by local artist Meghan Myres entitled a visual dialogue with Amelia, the girl who wants to fly can be viewed free of charge from September 13 to October 23.

To purchase tickets to the production, please visit www.gctc.ca or call the Box Office at 613-236-5196.
