Review: (Toronto) Piece of Mind (Fringe)

Uncomfortable as it should be

Have you ever wondered what your innermost thoughts would look like in the form of dance? Piece of Mind, brought to us by the skindivers dance company shows us just that. Piece of Mind is an elegant, emotional and intense performance by six highly-skilled dancers. Choreographed by Hanna Kent, Piece of Mind takes us through the thoughts of a woman, performed by Amanda Davis, who profoundly portrays the pain, regret, and sadness of someone who had just gone through a traumatic experience such as the loss of a child.

The first scene, danced solo by Davis, is uncomfortable as it should be. Effectively juxtaposing the pain and trauma expressed through her dance is the song Close To You by the Carpenters which plays as she moves erratically and slowly across the stage. Alongside Davis are her fierce comrades Catherine Larocque, Daniella Marotta, Marisa Ricci, Victoria Seguin and Cristina Tucciarone who play her innermost demons and angels. Their uniformity and intricate collaboration is well choreographed with good give and take between the dancers. Story and context aside, watching these dancers just for the sake of dance is simply breath-taking. The amount of technique, passion and strength is evident as I see them on stage bending and moving in ways I never thought possible. It takes commitment to be a true dancer and all these women prove just that.
