One thing that is always clear about Joanna Akyol's work is that she works closely with the text, actors, set concepts and - as evident in this brilliant example - lighting designer. In this shot from Factory Theatre's revival of the Fringe hit, Iceland, Ms Akyol has chosen a moment with actors Lauren Vandenbrook and Kawa Ada that is seething with emotion even as the photo itself plays with colour, chiaroscuro and painteresque composition. The eye is drawn to face, white shirt and hand and then continues to roam to the metal of the chair and the obscured figure. This is one of those great theatre photos that works as promotion and stand-alone.
