NEWS: Alberta Theatre Projects Announces New Playwright in Residence (Press release)

Alberta Theatre Projects Announces New Playwright in Residence

Calgary, AB- Alberta Theatre Projects welcomes Rebecca Northan as this season’s Playwright in Residence.

ATP’s Playwrights in Residence program supports Canadian playwrights in their creation of new work. “Building relationships with artists and encouraging them to take a risk with their work are core values in our play development programs at ATP,” says Vicki Stroich, ATP’s Artistic Associate – Festival.
Rebecca Northan’s longstanding relationship with ATP started off when she was a high school student as a member of our Student Writers Group, a program designed to support young emerging playwrights. Since then she’s gone on to perform in ATP shows, co-create and direct a play in the Enbridge playRites Festival of New Canadian Plays, and lend a hand at the Lawson Lundell Celebrity Hors d’Oeuvres. As our playwright in residence Rebecca will receive support and guidance towards her play Legend Has It that will premiere during the 29th Annual Enbridge playRites Festival of New Canadian Plays.

“The spontaneous nature of her work is all about embracing risk and connecting in a meaningful way with audiences. We’re excited to support the next big leap she is taking in developing her unique style of storytelling,” says Vicki Stroich.

The program shows ATP’s strong commitment to the development of new Canadian plays and Rebecca Northan is “so thrilled to be this year's Playwright in Residence, and honoured that ATP would take the risk of producing my most recent stab at Spontaneous Theatre with Legend Has It. It is the marriage of my improv world and my theatre world and I couldn't be more excited, or nervous! I also could not think of a more vibrant and essential theatre company in which to bring it to life.”
