headed to Toronto
In an announcement that was pleasant though hardly surprising, Mirvish launched its 2012-13 season with the news that Book of Mormon (from those South Park guys) would be arriving in Toronto in summer of 2013 as part of the smash-hit musical's first national tour.
Other productions in the all-musical lineup: La Cage aux Folles (based on the 1973 French farce); Andrew Lloyd Webber's London production of The Wizard of Oz (however cast entirely in Toronto); Sister Act (the musical adaptation of the 1992 Whoopi Goldberg movie); Honeymoon in Vegas (based on the 1982 film and starring Tony - Who's the Boss - Danza); Backbeat - another London import - based on the early days of The Beatles.
The season was launched before a large crowd at the newly rechristened Ed Mirvish Theatre. The presentation included performances by the composer of Honeymoon, Jason Robert Brown, and an appearance and performance by star Danza and an appearance by Bobby Lopez co-creator/composer of Book of Mormon (who may have let the Mormon cat out of the bag, last night, when he tweeted that he was in Toronto). As an off-season production Mirvish will also present Bloodless, from the new company Theatre 20 - a made-in-Canada piece to be directed by Colm Wilkinson (directorial debut). Wilkinson is best known for his performances, around the world, as Jean Valjean in Les Misérables.
